Special Educational Needs
Dundonald High School has the only post-primary Moderate Learning Difficulties Unit in the North Down Area.
The specialist teachers enable pupils to improve their performance and reach their full potential. It is recognised that with success comes renewed self-confidence and raised self-esteem.
Children with special educational needs are well catered for through our learning support programme, where dedicated specialist staff use modern integrated learning systems and a corrective reading programme to provide extra support in literacy, numeracy and social development. Where appropriate, special arrangements are provided for internal and external examinations.
We also have Moderate Learning Unit classes for pupils in years 8, 9 and 10 who have Special Educational Statements. These classes are taught by specialist teachers for English, Mathematics, Geography and History and integrated with their peers for their other subjects.
An important aspect of the department is the identification and assessment of children with special needs. In order to acquire this information, all pupils on entry to Year 8 are given a screening test which helps highlight any initial literacy problems. As a result, immediate remediation can therefore be put in place.
There are many aspects to special needs including literacy and numeracy delays, dyslexia, autism, mild/moderate learning difficulties, physical difficulties, hearing impairment etc, all of which are catered for in every area of the curriculum.
For those pupils identified with specific difficulties, a variety of resources and strategies are available. Every effort is made to tailor tuition and support towards the personal needs of each pupil.
Due to the nature of the work carried out within this department, parents are encouraged to play a vital role in helping the school address the needs of their child.
Parental interviews are conducted regularly with Mr K. Perry (SENCO) throughout the academic year for all SEN pupils. This helps to foster a close working relationship between home and school. Further interviews are held throughout the year such as Parents' Afternoons and Annual Review Meetings.
It is the aim of this department to provide a safe, secure environment where pupils with a wide range of difficulties can reach their full potential through support, guidance and encouragement.
